Skyscraper in Drag!
From the desk of Jeff Atlas
Q: I have never liked the “JukeBox” Marriott at Fifth and Mission. Do you find any redeeming qualities?
A: In a word, no. It’s an insult to our skyline. However, the greater insult might be what the New York Times said when it opened in 1990. They wrote that it was “exceptionally crude…..nothing if not garish…absolutely awful.” They added, “The whole thing looks like a skyscraper in drag.” Then, as a summary, “it is strangely appropriate to San Francisco.”
Thanks, New York Times.
Q: I am thinking about renovating my kitchen with granite counters and stainless steel appliances. It that a safe bet?
A: One of the great truisms of kitchen design: the more something looks “in”, the more it will look “out.” Just one example is the kitchen in “The Brady Bunch.” Yes, “Avocado” was once the hottest color. Certainly, granite and stainless steel have had a good run. But I am getting a sense that run is coming to an end. I am seeing alot of grey kitchens these days and all appliances are hidden behind matching cabinet doors. So, if you genuinely like granite and stainless steel, go ahead. But be aware that it might not age well over the next decade.
